Donaldson is a surname related to the great Clan Donald or MacDonald, from the Gaelic Domhnall (Donald) and Mhic Domhnall (MacDonald), son of Donald.
The first chief, Donald (Domhnall Mhic Raghnuill) was the son of Ranald (Raghnuill), the self-styled Lord of the Isles and the son of the great Norse king, Somerled. Angus Mor, Donald's son, declared allegiance to Alexander III after the defeat of the Norwegian king Hakken (Hako) at the Battle of Largs in 1263, while his son, Angus Og, fought alongside Robert the Bruce.
After Clan Donald's title, the Lord of the Isles, was declared forfeit by James IV in 1493 when the chief, John MacDonald, was found to have made a secret alliance with England's Edward IV, the various branches of the clan evolved under their own chieftains. The main branches were Clan Donald of Sleat (in Skye), Clanranald (in Moidart, Glengarry, Lochaber and Glencoe), with MacDonalds of Glengarry adopting the spelling MacDonnell.
Although there is no specific Donaldson tartan, people named Donaldson may wear the tartans of Clan Donald: the MacDonald and MacDonnell tartans.
