Men’s Sporrans

You’ve ordered a kilt. It looks great. But there’s nowhere to put your phone, your wallet or your keys. And you don’t want bulges spoiling the line of your lovely evening jacket. You need a kilt sporran.

A kilt sporran (from the Gaelic sporan, meaning purse / wallet / Scottish kilt pouch) sits in front of your kilt, held by a belt of leather and chain around your waist. And what a marvellous thing it is!

The first sporrans were simple affairs, being a leather pouch tied by a strap to the belt that held the feileadh-mhor or great kilt together – basically a purse that was worn with a kilt. But as similar pouches worn across Europe were replaced by pockets and small wallets or purses that went inside pockets, in Scotland the kilt and sporran remained. After all, we still wear kilts. And no one’s yet invented a kilt pocket.

Your sporran is at once practical and ornamental. It’s designed to be seen. Of course some sporrans are more ornamental than others, none more so than the horse hair sporrans worn by the Scottish regiments: the Royal Regiment of Scotland horse hair sporran, the Scots Guards horse hair sporran, and the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards horse hair sporran. And of course horse hair sporrans worn by pipe bands everywhere on the planet.
