Probably the most romantic type of brooch in Scotland’s history, luckenbooth brooches were so called because they were sold from locked booths – lucken booths – on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, and were exchanged on betrothal. They were subsequently pinned to the couple’s baby’s shawl.
