Traditional Highland Trews have their own distinctive cut: high-waisted, beautifully tailored and made from substantial pure wool tartan , with a presence that works naturally alongside a Prince Charlie, Argyll or other Highland jacket.

They're an elegant alternative to the kilt for a wedding, black-tie event, Burns Supper or any occasion where Highland dress is called for.

Cloth with the weight to hang properly
Traditional trews call for a more substantial cloth.

We make ours from premium 13–14oz pure wool tartan , including Lochcarron of Scotland's 13oz Braeriach and Strathmore Woollen Company's 14oz W60 , depending on the tartan selected.

That extra substance is important. It gives properly tailored trews their clean line, excellent drape and unmistakably formal appearance while remaining comfortable to wear.

These are fabrics made for serious Highland tailoring — the same calibre of cloth we use for our flagship kilts.
Old & Rare — heritage cloth, distinctive tartans
Our Old & Rare collection extends the choice to less common clan, district and historic tartans from House of Edgar , woven in traditional single-width 13oz kilting cloth.

Single-width weaving has deep roots in Scottish textile history, and House of Edgar continues this specialist method today using a traditional kilting selvedge.

These cloths cost more to produce and consequently carry an additional charge, but make some particularly distinctive and harder-to-find tartans available for your trews.
Fishtail or Argyll?
Both are traditional high-waisted trews. The difference is how you intend to wear them.
Fishtail
The traditional high fishtail back is designed to be worn with braces , giving a beautifully clean waistline without a belt.

It's an especially good choice for formal Highland dress, where the waist is largely concealed by your waistcoat or jacket.
Argyll
Our Argyll waist is also cut high , but incorporates broad belt loops so the trews can be worn with a Highland belt.

Choose this style if you prefer the versatility of a belt while retaining the traditional high-waisted cut and appearance of proper trews.

Trews depend on their cut.

We'll use the measurements you provide to make your pair specifically for you, rather than altering a standard-size garment afterwards.

The high waist, length and overall proportions are all considered together to give the clean, tailored line that distinguishes traditional trews from ordinary tartan trousers.

Measurements guide

Waist: Remember that these trews are high-waisted and are worn around your waist, not, as with most trousers nowadays, around your hips. Pass the tape over your belly-button, or find the top of your hip bone and pass the tape approximately 1" (2.5cm) above it. The tape should be comfortably tight.
Hips or seat: measure around your seat ensuring the tape passes around the largest part of the buttocks.
Inside Leg: measure from the top of the inner trouser seam (where the two seams meet) down to the top of the heel (where the heel meets the sole of the shoe). Alternatively, as a rough guide you can calculate your inside leg measurement by subtracting 11" (28cm) from the outside leg measurement
Outside Leg: Measure the outside leg from from 1" (2.5cm) above the hip bone down to the top of the heel (where the heel meets the sole of your shoe)
